A very rare and superlative quality French percussion shotgun by L. Carpentier of Paris, circa 1840, with nicely engraved locks and lock plates. 16 gauge, 28-inch barrels with concave rib. Gold-inlaid legend reading: Carpentier A Paris. Engraved hammers and lockplates with leafage patterns and dentate borders. Engraved screws. Lockplates with gold-inlaid legend: Carpentier A Paris. Tangs, trigger-guard and buttplate engraved en suite. Varnished walnut stock with checkered wrist panels and German silver wedge escutcheons. Sling eyes. Hardwood ramrod with brass tip. Partially redressed Barrels showing a brown patina, rebrowned in 19th century, with some original finish present in protected areas. Left hammer with fine crack present below spur. Locks and furniture with brown age patina. Front of triggerguard has become detached and in need of resoldering. Some screw slots marred. Wood refinished and showing scattered wear and dents present consistent with age. Action good. The overall length is approximately 45". This French beauty has aged very gracefully over the course of her 165+ years. She is a superlative, important example from a very hard to acquire master Parisian gunsmith. Sold in "as is" condition.
