The Poetical Works of Geoffrey Chaucer in fourteen volumes of which this is vol. xIV only with a glossary. The Miscellaneous Pieces from Urry trades Edition (1721) The Canterbury Tales from Tyrwhitt trades Edition (1775) at the Apollo Press by the Martins Edinburg in 1782. Quarter leather with marbled boards. All four corners have lost their leather. Title author and scallop shell embellishments in gilt on six compartment spine with gilt bands. 1.3 cm. x 1.5 cm. leather loss at foot of spine. Front hinge is cracked with board hanging on by a thread (literally) and back hinge is 60 percent cracked. Edge-wear scuffs grime and shelf-wear are consistent with age. 244 white to off-white pages without foxing spotting tear or loss. Text is complete. Volume measures: 8.3 cm. x 13.2 cm. (32mo). Volume is a candidate for recovering. Great pages not so hot on the outside. Geoffrey Chaucer (cir. 1343 25 October 1400) was an English author poet philosopher bureaucrat courtier and diplomat. Although he wrote many works he is best remembered for his unfinished frame narrative The Canterbury Tales Sometimes called the father of English literature Chaucer is credited by some scholars as the first author to demonstrate the artistic legitimacy of the vernacular English language rather than French or Latin.
